Position Summary
The Manager of Environmental Services oversees all housekeeping, custodial, and waste management operations to ensure a safe, clean, and compliant hospital environment. This role ensures adherence to infection control standards, manages biohazardous and solid waste programs, and leads staff to maintain high-quality environmental services across the facility.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead daily operations of housekeeping, custodial, and janitorial services
- Manage infection control and integrated waste programs (biohazard, recycling, waste prevention)
- Supervise, train, schedule, and evaluate Environmental Services staff
- Oversee hiring, performance management, and employee development
- Ensure compliance with Joint Commission and federal, state, and local regulations
- Develop and implement departmental policies, programs, and process improvements
- Manage departmental budgets, payroll, and resource allocation
- Monitor service quality, productivity, and customer satisfaction
- Coordinate projects to minimize disruption to hospital operations
- Maintain equipment, supplies, and safe working conditions
- Collaborate with other departments and provide technical expertise
- Respond to issues and implement corrective actions as needed
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Environmental Services, Environmental Engineering, or related field
OR
Experience: 3+ years of supervisory/management experience in hospital environmental services
Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of infection control, biohazardous waste, and regulatory compliance
- Experience with waste management, recycling, and environmental programs
- Strong leadership, staff management, and communication skills
- Budgeting, cost control, and operational planning experience
- Ability to analyze problems and implement effective solutions
- Experience in union environments preferred
- Proficiency with computer systems and reporting
Additional Requirements
- Valid California Driver’s License
- Availability to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evening shifts
- Ability to conduct routine inspections across hospital and affiliated sites
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand/walk for extended periods and perform inspections
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs as needed
- Manual dexterity for equipment handling and administrative tasks
